Aston Villa v Burnley: Carling Cup Open Thread

Burnley travel to Villa Park for the fourth round of the League Cup. This fixture is one that Aston Villa, by virtue of being in a higher division, should easily win. So why the sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach?

Should Villa wish to advance to the semi-finals of the cup and once again challenge for hardware, they need to do something they haven't done since the sixteenth minute of the Spurs match: score a goal. Ok, that's not quite true. Richard Dunne scored a goal last Saturday, but the problem there is that the goal was counted for Sunderland. So we'll amend that statement: Villa need to score a goal by putting the ball into the opposition's net. Or, I suppose, getting the opposition to flub it and put the ball in their own net. At this point, either way works for me.

Aaron and I discussed the fact that he'd rather see the team lose 4-3 than 1-0. Could we see that today?

Aston Villa Starting XI:Friedel; Lichaj, Cuellar, Clark; Beye; Sidwell, Albrighton, Reo-Coker, Bannan; Ireland, Young, Carew

Reserves:Guzan, Downing, Johnson, Collins, Hogg, Delfouneso, Heskey

Burnley Starting XI:Grant, Mears, Carlisle, Duff, Fox, Alexander, Rodriguez, Marney, Cork, Wallace, Paterson.

Reserves: Jensen, Iwelumo, Elliott, Edgar, Bikey, Easton, Thompson

Barry!

That is an odd line-up though

I would totally stand outside Marc Albrighton's house playing Peter Gabriel music.

1944: The teams are emerging at Villa Park, St James’ Park and Upton Park. Ready for some Parklife? Ahem, sorry.

Oh dear.

Who ever would have thought
1952: At Villa Park, Burnley have made a bright start to proceedings with Jack Cork – on loan from Chelsea – getting on the ball nicely in the early stages. Steve Sidwell has miscued Villa’s best early chance from inside the area.

NRC. So, so close. In on goal. Just the keeper to beat. Keeper saves.

This is worse
Well I’ve seen some sitters missed this season – and this is right up there with the worst. Ashley Young dashes on to Stephen Ireland’s through-ball and squares for Nigel Reo-Coker, but the Villa captain aims his tap-in straight at Burnley keeper Lee Grant who gratefully pushes the shot away.

by Kirsten Schlewitz on Oct 27, 2010 8:11 PM BST up reply actions

Yeah, could be worse
2012: Our BBC London commentator reckons “there’s very little sign West Ham have a coherent plan to rescue this match” – which is a bit worrying for Hammers fans, to say the least.

I would totally stand outside Marc Albrighton's house playing Peter Gabriel music.

strange that they would ESPN would offer live video to English customers then.

Also, because I have TWC and they haven’t got their shit together, I can’t find out whether or not it’s on in the US

I'm not sure if it means they're showing it over there or not...

An option for “Watch Live” will occasionally show up on really random games throughout the season.

I dunno- I'd have to ask my parents who live there

or find out when I go there for Winter break. The region coding on Espn3 is pretty strong- they always kick you to the US site

Lichaj is a really solid player. And looks comfortable on the ball.

Arsenal goal: What a Krul end to the half that is. Arsenal pinch the lead on the stroke of half-time as Nicklas Bendtner’s header causes panic in the Newcastle box, the ball finally trickling over the line when Ryan Taylor’s goalline clearance comes off the back of keeper Tim Krul’s head.

What a Krul sport….

I would need to see video, but 4-1-5 isn't exactly new territory for houllier

he did something similar at Lyon with great success

it shapes up like this in a 3-2-5

it’s 3-1-1-3-2 where the two midfielders hold and rarely get high up the pitch, and foul if the play threatens to get behind them. the next three are more traditional attacking mids, who press up the pitch across the top of the box or look for the through ball, and the top two generally stack up and move around a lot in the middle. It’s a nervy formation that possesses the ball a great deal in the opponent half and forces the back line to make bad choices if done right. If done wrong, well, the other team gets their chances.
There’s a couple different ways to run the formation, that’s just one.

where if it isn’t 4-4-2. it isn’t sporting is it. You might as well shoot the noble English sweeper with a rifle at that point

more a 3-2-5 in France

you can try it against a Burnley who more likely than not are just going to hunker down and counter

Arsenal just scored again and Steve Sidwell needs to grow
Steve Sidwell races into the box to get on the end of Eric Lichaj’s cross but it skims off his head and out for a goal-kick – if he’d been a couple of inches taller, that could’ve been the opener at Villa Park.

Fabregas coming on for Arsenal?

Guess Wenger wasn’t just whistling whatever the French equivalent of Dixie would be about winning silverware.
