Brad Guzan: The U.S.'s Best Player Against South Africa
It's unfortunate that the same can't be said for Brad Guzan, who was the States' best player, proving himself well deserving of the armband. Guzan will continue to be Tim Howard's understudy, and until he gets a starting job at club level, it will be difficult for him to make his case as the number one. But he did give the U.S. a rare clean sheet, and given the match's first 25 minutes, had he allowed a goal, nobody would have blamed him.
Perhaps Tim Howard would have also made those reads?
That's from something that will be up in a few minutes at SBNation's main Soccer page. While proofing it, I had this sudden urge to share my thoughts with Community Villa and see what everybody thought about Guzan's performance.
I'm always concerned about rust, given how little he plays for club or country. If Mr. No. 2 has gathered rust, he left it in Birmingham.

I think saying Guzan turned in the best performance yesterday is fair.
I also think keepers matter less than any other position on the pitch, so there’s that. But Guzan is a damned fine keeper and he’s still young as keepers go.
Rust is certainly concern, but Guzan sees plenty of time for the reserves. So while the competition isn’t as good, he’s not just loitering at Bodymoor Heath all day. He’s getting live action.
That's an interesting take on keepers, Aaron
and one I’d like to hear more about, because I think I agree…but this is maybe just because I’m tired of everyone going on and on about the keepers at Arsenal.
Over the course of a season ...
Yes. In the context of one match?

Keepers can definitely have a huge impact on one match.
That’s why I think saying Guzan was the best player against South Africa is completely reasonable.

I honestly thought Lechaj was the best player in the match..
but Guzan would be my #2. He provided veteran leadership that was desperately needed for the young Americans.
@charliedrysdale
Does Guzan ever play for the reserves?
I am just a bitter Wizards fan who clings to my bobbleheads and that 2005 playoff series victory!
