Open World Cup Thread, June 24th 2010
Slovakia - Italy, 7:00 AM PDT/10:00 AM EDT/15:00 GMT
Paraguay - New Zealand, 7:00 AM PDT/10:00 AM EDT/15:00 GMT
Denmark - Japan, 11:30 AM PDT/2:30 PM EDT/19:30 GMT
Cameroon - Netherlands, 11:30 AM PDT/2:30 PM EDT/19:30 GMT
Last day for Groups E and F. Netherlands are through from Group E and Denmark must win to advance as they are one goal behind Japan on differential.
Everyone is still technically in it in Group F. Slovakia must beat Italy and hope for a Paraguay win or draw between Paraguay and New Zealand. New Zealand and Italy are in exactly the same situation; two points and no goals between them. I personally am hoping for victories by Paraguay and New Zealand by margins sufficient enough to send both of them through. I am also hoping for the fully paid deed to a 25th floor penthouse condo with views of downtown Seattle, the Sound, Lake Washington, the Olympics and the Cascades.
Also, this happened:

Go Paraguay and Denmark today
I expect Italy to win to finish second (though I will be rooting for Slovakia to knock them out). And I expect Netherlands to get a result to win the group.

Great run by Valdez down the sideline for Paraguay
Beat two defenders and kept the ball in then wasted it by blasting nowhere near the goalkeeper.

Wouldn’t keep Paraguay off the top of the group. Only Italy leading or New Zealand scoring can do that.

Very happy with apparent result but
ESPN should be embarrassed with themselves over their “analysis” of Italy offsides call. How you decided the Dempsey call was bad, but this was good takes some serious delusion. They were almost the exact same situations. Still, I’m glad it turned out this way.

I'm going to have to show my bias here
During the NZ-SVK game, everyone talked about what a shock it was. Which, ok, the goal kind of was. During the NZ-ITA game, everyone talked about how terrible Italy was. At the end of the NZ-PAR game, the announcers were talking about how poorly Paraguay showed and how negatively they played.
There’s one common link in those three games. And it wasn’t just luck. New Zealand put on a show of how to defend against better teams. They covered for each other, they worked in unison together, they didn’t yell at each other. That was a fucking team, and they deserved each of those three points they picked up.
No one wants to admit that sometimes a team constructed as a team, rather than just a bunch of stars
can pull together and actually produce results.
by Kirsten Schlewitz on Jun 24, 2010 5:04 PM BST up reply actions
a more parallel example might be argentine basketball vs US baseketball, 2004.
don't care if i ever get back.
by AV on Jun 24, 2010 6:53 PM BST up reply actions
A fair comparison
but I was more aiming at that the 2008 US squad was put together much better than the 2004 one, despite the teams having similar talent levels
by seattlebruin on Jun 24, 2010 7:58 PM BST up reply actions
I feel the same way about Algeria.
I get that people don’t like to watch defensive minded teams, but eventually they are going to have to accept that just because teams play a style they don’t like as much doesn’t mean they aren’t legitimately good teams.
You’d think Jose Mourinho would be enough to convince people of this, but apparently not. Too bad I hate his ass now.
by Aaron Campeau on Jun 24, 2010 5:05 PM BST up reply actions
But to be fair
The Kiwi goal led a charmed life in the Paraguay match and the Italian match. They defended very well, but they had some serious fortune in both matches.

by George Templeton on Jun 24, 2010 5:07 PM BST up reply actions
I'll just offer this
It doesn’t bother me one bit to see teams like NZ and ALG tying teams in knots with solid defending. It does drive me crazy to see a team like Italy play as defensively as it usually does. Obviously, they have the talent to play a more entertaining style and it drives me crazy that they choose not to until backed against a wall. I think solid team play is a great way for smaller, less skilled countries to go about taking down giants.
Because if it's not Love | Then it's the bomb ... | That will bring us together
by Jeremiah Oshan on Jun 24, 2010 5:09 PM BST up reply actions
I guess I understand the sentiment
but it’s not like the style Italy play is a recent development; Catenaccio has been around since the 60s. I can’t bring myself to be critical of Italy (or Serie A clubs for that matter) for playing the way they do because they’ve been doing it for half a century. Even if I don’t like it.
by Aaron Campeau on Jun 24, 2010 5:19 PM BST up reply actions
I think that they've done it for so long bothers me even more
They’ve always had talented players and just see winning as the only worthwhile goal (as opposed to being entertaining from time to time). I certainly appreciate that sentiment, but that doesn’t mean I like it.
Because if it's not Love | Then it's the bomb ... | That will bring us together
by Jeremiah Oshan on Jun 24, 2010 6:45 PM BST up reply actions
I think that we are functionally in agreement.
I don’t like the way they play either, and it’s why I cheer against the Italians in international competitions and watch far less Seria A than any other major league. At the same time, they’ve had so much success with it that I can’t blame them for playing the way they do, which I would imagine is where our opinions diverge.
by Aaron Campeau on Jun 24, 2010 8:46 PM BST up reply actions
Ian Darke thought Algeria was content with the draw and that it was "very negative"
If they really were happy to take a draw just to deny advancement to the US, then that is cynical. But I thought they played solid defense and looked for chances in transition. I had no problem with their play (other than the late cheap shot to Dempsey’s face).
