Open World Cup Thread, June 25th 2010
North Korea - Ivory Cost, 7:00 AM PDT/10:00 AM EDT/15:00 GMT
Portugal - Brazil, 7:00 AM PDT/10:00 AM EDT/15:00 GMT
Switzerland - Honduras, 11:30 AM PDT/2:30 PM EDT/19:30 GMT
Chile - Spain, 11:30 AM PDT/2:30 PM EDT/19:30 GMT
As hard as it is to believe, these are the final four matches of the group stage. Group G is all but decided; Ivory Coast are still eligible to advance in the technical sense, but in order for that to happen Portugal must lose and the Ivory Coast must defeat North Korea by at least ten goals. The good news for the Ivory Coast is that if any team in this tournament could surrender ten goals, it's most likely North Korea.
Group H is still fairly interesting; no teams have been mathematically eliminated, although Honduras advancing would require a minor miracle. Spain and Chile are most likely the favorites to advance, but Switzerland aren't in a terrible position. They'll be favored to beat Honduras and because Spain can't afford to play conservatively, the Swiss could see themselves through with a strong offensive performance. It seems reasonable to expect Spain and Switzerland to win, which would mean that a team with six points would fail to advance. Which, man that would really suck.

Chile is going to have six points and fail to advance and that will make me sad.

4-4-2 says nine goals by Ivory Coast will do it.

Nine would draw them level
and I guess it would put them through, unless Portugal scores a few.

So, did we ever get a definitive answer on yellows carrying over?
Last I heard was that a second yellow today equals a suspension in the round of 16, then the slate is clean for the round of 8.
that’s my understanding too.

brazil had a good shot blocked by the GK, fast break to the other side and portugal flopped in the area but the ref didn’t bite.

That is why Drogba is brilliant
Two North Korea players literally on his back, he holds on to the ball, flips around and gets the ball past them.

they did give him time for him to lift his head and look around like he was a tourist, but yes, the dribbling was pretty good.

I love Spain and in some ways would be sad to see them not go through
but in other ways I am fascinated by a World Cup in which the team generally considered the be the best in the world, the previous winner and previous runner-up do not advance to the knock out stage.
I can see that, but I want Switzerland to advance so badly that the Chile-Spain result only matters in that I want it to help the Swiss.
I think I'd rather Switzerland and Chile advance than Spain
for a multitude of reasons.
by Aaron Campeau on Jun 25, 2010 7:49 PM BST up reply actions
And Xavi, who I love.
But Spain going out in the group stage would illustrate a few different points I’m planning to make in a post at some point soon and boy would it make it easier to write. Also, underdogs are fun.

I do really enjoy that when Estrada was sent off Bielsa just moved the holding mid back to defense and made it a 3-3-3 from a 3-1-3-3 instead of making a sub.
chile has tricky tactics ahead. i don’t want to get too technical, but way i see it, chile has an option. they can either come out of the locker ready to defend like crazy, concede nothing more, get no cards, and score once on a break. or pantse the spaniards and run for the bus. i’m good either way.

Chile really does have options here. They can push like hell for a goal to make a Suisse goal irrelevant, but would probably give up more goals to Spain.
I think I’d do that because unless Suisse scores Spain can win 10-0.

i found 7500 because i felt stupid talking soccer in the face my wOBA-quoting colleagues at AN. but maybe i’ll go by and say hi.
but i came back to say: i pulled this gif into flash and looked at it frame by frame. much easier to see what’s going on. in frames 5 and 6, estrada’s right knee does seem to touch and displace torres’ right foot toward torres’ left leg, thus causing that self-trip. what convinces me even more is that torres’ lower leg rotates in a way that would be unnatural in running (imagine his bent leg is an L where the vertical stays stil from hip to knee, l but the horizontal bar turns on the horizontal axis). i don’t think torres took a dive. he may have exaggerated the severity and the aftermath, but the initial contact was enough to make him go down. further, i don’t think estrada meant to touch torres. i have no evidence of it, but it seems a split second difference in the timing of their running cycles would have let each other pass without problem. but they passed at just the right time when one runner’s limb touched the other’s.
