The Vernal Villan: Week 1

Well that was a heck of a welcome to seriously cheering for an EPL team. There's no need for me to recap what's already been covered, and that's not even the point of this all. Instead: what's it like for the new fan in the first week? Well, I was shocked by how much I was into the match. I knew I'd be rooting for Villa, but I didn't realize how hard I had already fallen for the team. I was ecstatic about the win, and each goal brought cheers and celebration anew from me.

I was especially ecstatic to see that early frontrunner for my favorite player (Stewart Downing) scored the first goal. Sure, it was a bit of a clunker, but that didn't make me any less excited. The best part is that it was the second goalkeeping gaffe by Green that I've gotten to see benefit "my" team this summer. That lad is a champ. But I thought the high point of the day was Milner scoring. Here's a guy I hadn't had a chance to get to watch. Over the past month he's been nearly vilified by the fans, and yet I couldn't see why. I was glad to see him in the starting XI on Saturday, as my simple-minded thought was: put the best guys on the pitch. And he was clearly one of our best. So to see him work like mad and get rewarded with a solid goal and a standing ovation was really quite nice. I'm glad I got the chance to see some of what made him a hero.

A few other notes from week one: I found out the one main problem with viewing games. It's not the games, it's the girlfriend. She's a lovely girl, and enjoys sports in general, but loathes soccer. Also, I've won my first bit of Villa swag, nabbing an awesome 1982 European Champions scarf on EBay. Now to get a kit.

But the weekend was better than I could have imagined. I cannot wait for Europa play tomorrow, and I've fallen for this team hook, line, and sinker. This is going to be a great season.

I'm sure that scarf is awesome....

I got a 1982 kit a few months ago and I love it.

And yes, this was a great start to the season for all Villans new and old!

There's a funny thing about the whole low scoring thing.

Let’s take an American football score of say 21-14 and translate that to a soccer score of 3-2. Obviously, 21-14 looks better if you want a “high” scoring game, but it still ends up equaling a 3-2 game. The score from this game would have been 21-0 if you applied the scoring rules of American Football to it.

But those point values are there for weighting.

If you got an equal amount of points for FGs as you did TDs, it’d be far too easy for a cruddy team with a great kicker to hang in games with a legitimately great team.

So while I don’t buy the “soccer is too low scoring” argument (obviously), I don’t think you can really compare the scores of a football game to a soccer game.

I'm not really sure.

She’s really kind of a two sports + Olympics girl. She loves baseball (White Sox) and football (Packers), and that’s pretty much it. Try as I may, I can’t get her into soccer.

New EPL / Aston Villa fan here, as well

After lifelong “dabbling” in football (soccer), 2010 is the year I’ve decided to go all-out in following the EPL. After many hours of research and consideration, I’ve decided Aston Villa is “my squad.” My wife is giving it a chance…she’s a SUPERB sports fan — knows more than most guys I talk with!

I'm glad to hear this!

Be sure to check back in these posts. I plan on doing it weekly, and it’s a great place for the old hands at soccer to help new people like us!

Watching Aston Villa matches

I too have decided to start following Aston Villa this season. Having Fox Soccer Channel last weekend made it easy, but I’m seeing that the next few weeks might make this a little more difficult. Is foxsoccer.tv the go-to option for the rest of the season (in other words, how often should I expect Aston Villa to show up on ESPN/FSC)?

Also: are there any American sites recommended for purchasing Aston Villa gear?

Villa's online store is good.

They're on FSC + on Sunday.

They won’t be on as much as United and Chelsea, but you can catch every match via stream.
If you have a soccer bar, those are helpful.

Yeah, I get FSC but not FSC+ so I’ll take advantage of the foxsoccer.tv free trial for Sunday I suppose.
