League Cup Roundup (Birmingham? Who?)

So the Scum are scheduled to play tomorrow, but I decided to go ahead and post this anyway, as all but the Birmingham-Rochdale tie has been played. Everyone remember to cheer for The Dale tomorrow.

There was really only one Cupset in Round Two of the League Cup, with MK Dons defeating Blackpool 4-3 in added extra time. Ian Holloway made ten changes from the side that lost 6-0 to Arsenal (hey, Villa are just as good as Blackpool!) but those changes didn't quite work the way he would've liked. The Dons opened the scoring in the first minute, but after that the scoreline kept going back and forth, with Jermaine Easter scoring a brace in two minutes. Charlie Adam's penalty conversion gave Blackpool added time, but it was Lewis Guy that put the League One side ahead with ten minutes to spare. MK Dons are through and Blackpool become the first Premier League side to be eliminated from the Cup.

Eleven of the thirteen top-flight clubs that joined the cup for the second round are through:

Blackburn triumphed 3-1 over Norwich: well done beating last year's League One champions!

Southampton 0-1 Bolton: way to score one goal against this League One side, Wanderers!

Everton 5-1 Huddersfield: Everton finally do what they've been unable to do in the league--run rampant over a League One club. Oh, and John Heitinga scored an own goal and missed a penalty!

Fulham 6-0 Port Vale: Yes, Fulham, you joined the six-goal club. Against a side from League Two!

Accrington Stanley 2-3 Newcastle: Proof that you can't tell everything from one 6-0 thrashing--a League Two side scored twice on this EPL side that should still be on a high!

Stoke City 2-1 Shrewsbury: Potters hung on to take a one goal lead from a League Two side!

Sunderland 2-0 Colchester: Darren Bent scores twice to seal Sunderland's win over the League One club!

Leyton Orient 0-2 West Brom: The Baggies used an entirely different team to the one that beat Sunderland on Saturday, but they still managed to beat the League One Os!

West Ham 1-0 Oxford: Sad, I was starting to like the Yellows. Apparently they used up all their goals in the first round, because West Ham needed just one to triumph over this League Two side!

Hartlepool 0-3 Wigan: the Latics get their first win of the season over the League One Monkey Hangers, which is simply the most fabulous nickname ever!

Wolves 2-1 Southend: Wolves needed extra time to beat the Shrimpers, who were relegated to League Two last season!

Star-divide

The rest of the best:

Bradford 1-2 Preston (extra time): Championship side beats League Two.

Brentford 2-1 Hull City: One of last year's EPL sides gets knocked out by a League One side: semi cupset.

Crewe 0-1 Ipswich Town (extra time): Championship team needs extra time to finally score against League Two.

Leeds United 1-2 Leicester: Yay Foxes! Keeping my prediction of a Championship triumph in the cup alive!

Millwall 2-1 Middlesbrough: Championship v Championship, yawn.

Morecambe 1-3 Burnley: Clarets, fresh from the EPL, beat a League Two team.

Peterborough 2-1 Cardiff: Well, here a League One side beats a Championship team.

Portsmouth 1-1 Crystal Palace: Pompey needs penalties to triumph over another Championship side.

Reading 3-3 Northampton: League Two team scores 4 penalties to advance over a Championship side.

Scunthorpe 4-2 Sheffield Wednesday: Championship over League One.

Tranmere 1-3 Swansea: Championship over League One is getting old, ain't it?

Watford 1-2 Notts County: Good thing this is a case of League One over Championship, then.

Draw is Saturday, August 28. Cross fingers.

THERE'S ONLY 1 ROCHDALE!

"Shaw, Williams, prepared to venture down the left. There's a good ball in for Tony Morley. Oh, it must be and it is! It's Peter Withe"
