Aston Villa v Rapid Vienna: Reaction

Being a fan means that there is no rational way to discuss what happened in this match so shortly after the game's ending (or, in this case, before the game has even concluded).

Villa are out.

For the second year in a row.

To the same opposition.

The choices made here were questionable, to say the least. I will be back later, after calming down, to reflect more on what happened and how it could all have gone so wrong. But for now, if you want an outlet, or you want to put up some thoughts yourself, feel free to use the comments.

It's hard to be a Villa fan on days that we lose. It's even harder on days that we lose spectacularly. But sometimes, for me anyway, the hardest part is being a lone Villa fan in a sea of faces that don't get it. So that's what this place is for--a little room for people that get it.

This was just heartbreaking.

A few different lineup choices, and I think it turns out differently.

But you’re spot on about why this is tough. No one I see today will get why I’m pissed off at the sports gods.

I'm not angry, I'm not sad, I just feel sick.

For goodness sake, we played our third choice left back and many of the issues were on Beye's head.

That’s not MacDonald’s fault—at least, not entirely, and not even mostly.

I may not be pleased with every decision but he’s got a really hard job to do.

I agree

Personally I would have gone with Lichaj at Left Back. Going with Baye over a player with one first team appearance who was not that great last week is an understandable decision. Even Heskey played well. This is on the players not K-Mac. It is not the manager’s fault these guys could not hold a one goal lead for 15 minutes at home.

Perfect summation of this match.

Just look inside the bottom of a Port-o-John. That about sums it up.

I'm not going to BLAME MacDonald...

But at the same time, I have to say Lerner needs to appoint the permanent manager. Like, now. I don’t think MacDonald would be a great choice, but c’mon…what are we waiting for???

At this point I'd take Bob Bradley

if that meant we got Michael as part of the deal. A box-to-box midfielder who is strong in the tackle and can help Stan cover for a very weak looking back 4.

I was disappointed

that Kevin MacDonald repeated one of Martin O’Neill’s mistakes and that’s playing players out of position. And losing Gabby after a 12 minutes or whatever it was was a real bad slice of luck. I can’t help but feel that having him up front would’ve made the difference between winning and losing.

Rapid Got a brutal draw

Besiktas, CSKA Sophia, and Porto. Villa would have been fortunate to finish third in that group.

Villa would have been in a different pod wouldn't they? Or is that wrong.

I have a friend coming into town who’s a huge Toffees fan so I’m hoping for a good showing from the Villans.
