Aston Villa And The Managerial Merry-Go-Round
According to Five Live, Aston Villa have contacted Fulham to let them know they're not after manager Mark Hughes. Hurray! It is my goal in life to make rumors die away by writing about them, and who knows, perhaps this time I have accomplished said goal. So which rumors are left to kill?
Aaron wrote a post about potential managerial candidates and how he would feel if each were appointed. We've eliminated Hughes, and with Sam Allardyce going to West Ham, we're down to six. The betting lines are all about Carlo Ancelotti, and if you're so inclined, you can participate in a fun Twitter game about where the former Chelsea manager has been spotted in Birmingham.
Personally, I'm inclined to agree with Aaron -- while I'd certainly like Ancelotti more than Hughes, he really offers little in the way of excitement. Chelsea fielded a ridiculously low number of players in the league this season, and in their last match, a meaningless game against Everton, Ancelotti rolled out the entire first team. Josh McEachran didn't get a start. Milan Lalkovic, superb in reserve action and obviously one of my favorites, didn't even make the bench. Carlo rarely used his subs. He played the same formation again and again. Sure, he's talented enough, but not to the point where he satisfies my creative needs.Roberto! Roberto! Roberto!

Mat Kendrick wrote in the Mail
that it sounds like Ancelotti is who Lerner is targeting. Usually Mat is pretty spot on, but I don’t know what to believe right now.
I'm so tempted to just completely avoid football for a week or so
to get away from this craziness.
i tell the truth; i lie a lot
Poking my head in from Berlin to say this:
I would personally love to see Carlo Ancelotti or Rafa Benitez managing Villa. However, the year of Houllier taught us that we’re struggling to come out of a rather provincial mentality, both on the pitch and off it. The Villa supporters that turned on Houllier would probably turn on Ancelotti and will DEFINITELY turn on Benitez at the first opportunity. A lot of Villa fans seem to want Mark Hughes (David Moyes is a fairytale), and quite frankly we might deserve Mark Hughes, given the state the club’s in at the moment.
Some predictions:
If we hire Ancelotti: we definitely keep Stewart Downing, we might even keep Ashley Young. We go up two or three spots on the table, spend a bunch of money, and the kids don’t play very much. Ancelotti is viewed as a disappointment and leaves for Italy.
If we hire Benitez: we keep Downing, lose Young, and finish midtable, maybe move up one or two places. Rafa says something stupid in a press conference, fans turn on him. Lerner and co. stick with him and we gradually improve.
If we hire Hughes: we keep Downing (but lose him next summer), finish around the same, and everyone’s just a bit bored. To be fair to him, we’d throw away games by drawing them, rather than losing them like we did this year.
Unless it’s Mancini, I’d rather Villa didn’t hire anyone named Roberto.
In case it wasn't clear:
My ideal candidate is Rafa Benitez, believe it or not. But I’m still too worn out from last season to really want much of anything besides a quick resolution.
