Aston Villa U19s beat Ajax U19s 2-1 in Amsterdam on Tuesday, allowing them to progress to the next round of the NextGen tournament.
The Aston Villa U19s have progressed to the quarter-finals of the NextGen tournament after beating Ajax 2-1 in Amsterdam. Ajax defender Djavan Anderson scored first, but Villa striker Michael Drennan equalized before the break. Then it was Bradley Lewis, a Villa defender that loves to score, who put the visitors in the lead in the 64th minute. The Baby Villans had the first match in the Round of 16, and will need to wait until after March 7 to find out who they play next.
With his goal today, Micky Drennan becomes the top scorer of the tournament. The Irishman has scored six goals in seven matches, surpassing Conor Coady of Liverpool, who are set to play Sporting Lisbon this round.
Last year, the first of the NextGen Series, Villa lost to Ajax, the eventual runners-up, in their first group match, but beat them 3-0 at home, and finished top of the group. The Baby Villans were then knocked out of the Round of 16 in an exciting match against Marseille, with Gary Gardner grabbing an equalizer in the 90th minute before Marseille scored the winner in added extra time.
